Introduction

These two clubs are the best known and widely used utility – hybrid golf clubs.  TaylorMade is probably the utility – hybrid golf club industry leader in sales.  Their Rescue Mid and Rescue TP have been around and are proven winners.  They also have the clubs in left handed and women’s models.  You can get steel as well as graphite versions, in either, but the Rescue TP is the highest priced of the Rescue Clubs and is really for very low handicap players.

Can I Get A Steel Shaft?

Yes you can in both the Taylor Made Rescue Mid and the Taylor Made Rescue TP.  In the case of the Rescue Mid it is the Taylor Made Precision Micro Taper steel shaft and in the Rescue TP it is the always popular Dynamic Golf Steel shaft.  The Dynamic Gold shaft comes in either the S300 Stiff or the X300 extra-stiff.  I don't recommend that the average golfer get the TP since the club isn't designed to get the ball into the air like other utility hybrid golf clubs.  It is designed for a penetrating, lower, controlled ball flight popular with top amateur and professional golfers.  I have a good golf swing but I can't hit this club for distance and I push it right since the club is just not designed for the average player.  On the other hand, the steel shaft in the Rescue Mid is find for most players who desire a steel shaft.  It is available in R for regular, average swing speeds, and S for stiff, for faster swing speeds.

Can I Get A Graphite Shaft?

Again, you can get both the TaylorMade Rescue Mid and TaylorMade Rescue TP in graphite but like the steel shafted models the graphite shafts are really different and designed for players of different skill levels.  In the TaylorMade Rescue TP they have put in a tour level Fujikura Vista Pro 90 graphite shaft available in Still and X-Stiff flexes.  This shaft is specifically designed for the very highly skilled player and will have similar flight dynamics to their Dynamic Golf Steel shaft.  For the TaylorMade Rescue Mid they have installed their outstanding TM Ultralite graphite shaft available in M-70 for slower swing speeds, R-80 for regular folks and a S-90 flex for faster swing speeds.  In all cases this shaft combined with the outstanding TaylorMade head design will assist most players in lowering their scores by replacing their long irons (in one case your four or five wood).

Features of the TaylorMade Rescue utility – hybrid golf clubs

The clubface is made of 450-steel and the clubface is made of very strong, stress-resistant 455 steel.  Also, TaylorMade’s patented Pull-face construction allows for a very high COR.  To us non tech guys that means the ball really launches without being illegal.  According to TaylorMade, this construction allows for an overall increase of 5.5 MPH of ball-speed and seven additional yards of distance than its long-iron counterpart.  The club also features a double crown design that enhances the structural integrity of the clubhead minimizing head distortion at impact so that maximum energy is transferred to the ball.  All of the above results in a very high MOI (Moment of Inertia) compared to an equivalent long iron, making it far easier to hit and delivering improved performance on off-center hits.

Lastly, the club is designed so that the sole of the club reduces the amount of area that comes in contact with the turf, creating less resistance at impact and promoting an “iron-like” feeling through the hitting area.  The overall design allows this club to be playable from all kinds of lies and it can be used around the green for long chips and putts.  (This is why we call them utility golf clubs since they can be used in more ways than a traditional iron)

Models of the TaylorMade Rescue Mid and Rescue TP

It comes in both right and left handed models.  In the Rescue Mid you can get four clubs ranging from 16 to 25 degrees of loft.  The corresponding model numbers and lofts are: 2I/16, 3I/19, 4I/22 and 5I/25.  Again, I have an opinion.  Since most of us don’t have a two iron to replace I would use their model number 2I/16 to replace a four or five wood if you have a problem hitting these woods and want a more versatile club.  I have a 4I/22, in graphite, I use from time to time.  The Rescue TP comes in lofts of 14, 16 and 19 degree lofts in either steel or graphite.  Again, I recommend the TP for very skilled golfers.  (TP means Tour Preferred)
